In 1882 James and John Ritty invented a retail sales business machine which they called a ‘Cash Register’. In the same year they founded their company in Dayton Ohio and named it ‘The National Cash Register Company’. The Rittys' focused the majority of their efforts on the company’s manufacturing processes and production facilities. They had limited success with sales of their cash registers.

In the early 1880’s, an Ohio businessman, John Patterson, the proprietor and operator of a small dry goods enterprise had been losing money for some time. He saw an advertisement for Ritty’s cash registers and purchased some. Almost immediately Patterson’s dry goods store stop losing money. Patterson was so impressed with the performance of the Ritty cash registers that he purchased part of the Rittys’ National Cash Register company. Due in large part to the use of the Ritty cash registers and the resulting dramatic improvement in his financial situation in 1884 Patterson purchased a controlling interest in National Cash Register and took over its operation. He change the company’s focus from strictly manufacturing to innovation and sales.

Under Patterson’s management, National Cash Register became the industry leader in product innovations and sales, ultimately acquiring more than a 90 percent share of the cash register and related business machine market.

This cash register is an early National Cash Register model produced prior to its electric models beginning in 1906. I do not have a key for it and have never opened the register drawer. The cash register is used and all original. It is sold ‘as is’ for $150 OBO.
